In 1994, Dawn gave up her University of Miami orange and green pompons and began her career as a high school English/ESE/Reading teacher and public speaker. After graduating from the University of Miami with a degree in Psychology and Exceptional Student Education, she taught students with learning differences in grades 9-12 which eventually ignited her passion for teaching reading and writing.

One highlight of her career in public education is developing and writing an online intensive reading course for 11th and 12th-grade students in need of a passing score on Florida’s high stakes Reading exam. Students were selected from all Title 1 schools in Broward County. The completion rate for the state was 23%. Sixty-eight percent of the students who took her course completed successfully. The course also won a prestigious and highly competitive award from the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL) for Most Innovative Online Learning Program in 2010.

Dawn currently holds a Master's degree in Reading Education and is a professor at public and private universities in South Florida. Since 2005, she's also taught exclusively online high school English and Reading courses using interactive media that mimics the actual classroom. As a native South Floridian, Dawn likes to think of herself as an island girl and proud mother of three wise teenage girls, two black dogs, two cats, too many fish to count, countless plants, and of course, one DRAGON to protect the castle. A beardie named DeMarcus.
